Moving House? You May Be Able to Take Your Stairlift With You

Moving home can be an exciting new chapter, but if you already have a stairlift, you may be wondering:

“Can I move my stairlift to my new house?”

The good news is that, in many cases, the answer is yes.

At Midland Stairlifts, we offer a professional stairlift moving service across Nottingham, Derby, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the East Midlands, helping customers relocate their existing stairlift safely and professionally.

If you’re moving house and want to avoid the cost of purchasing another stairlift, our experienced engineers can assess whether your current stairlift can be transferred to your new property.

Can My Stairlift Be Moved?

The easiest stairlifts to move are straight stairlifts.

If your current home has a straight staircase and your new property also has a straight staircase, there’s a good chance we can relocate your stairlift.

Our team will carry out a full assessment before the move to ensure everything is suitable and safe.

Things to Consider Before Moving Your Stairlift

There are a few important factors that determine whether your stairlift can be transferred.

1. Your New Home Must Have a Straight Staircase

Our stairlift moving service is available for straight stairlifts. Unfortunately, curved stairlifts are custom-made to fit a specific staircase, so they generally cannot be moved to another property.

If your new home has a curved staircase, we can discuss the most suitable replacement options.

2. The Stairlift Must Be Installed on the Same Side

Many people don’t realise that some stairlifts are handed, meaning the stairlift may need to be installed on either the left-hand or right-hand side of the staircase.

For your existing stairlift to be reused, your new property will usually need the stairlift to be fitted on the same side as it is in your current home.

Our engineers will check this during our survey.

3. The Staircase Length Is Important

Another key consideration is the length of the staircase.

Your new staircase should be the same length or shorter than your existing one.

This is because we can professionally cut the rail down to suit a shorter staircase, but we cannot extend an existing rail if your new staircase is longer.

We’ll measure both staircases and advise you on whether your current stairlift can be reused.

Which Stairlifts Can Usually Be Moved?

We can assess many popular straight stairlift models, including:

* Homeglide stairlifts
* Acorn stairlifts
* Brooks stairlifts
* Handicare stairlifts

If you’re unsure which stairlift you have, simply contact our team and we’ll be happy to help.

Why Move Your Existing Stairlift?

Relocating your existing stairlift can often save you money compared with purchasing a brand-new one.

Benefits include:

* Lower overall costs
* Professional removal and reinstallation
* Continued use of a stairlift you’re already familiar with
* Less waste by reusing existing equipment
* Expert installation by experienced stairlift engineers

We’ll always provide honest advice and let you know whether moving your stairlift is the most practical and cost-effective solution.
